Islip is an inclusive, theologically open, and friendly church, attended by people of varying traditions: high church, low church, cultural Christian, committed, questioning, regular, and Christmas and Easter only, as is inevitable in any community where there is only one church.
The sermons are usually interesting and thoughtful and often provocative (see here); the music is good.
It is fair to say visitors and newcomers are immediately made welcome by the friendly congregation.
Our regular monthly pattern of worship is:
- First Sunday 10.30am Holy Communion
- Second Sunday 10.30am Sung Eucharist
- Third Sunday 10.30am Holy Communion
- Fourth Sunday 6.00pm Choral Evensong
There is a monthly half-hour service for parents and toddlers, known as ABC (Adults, Babies, Children), at 9.30am on the third Friday of the month.
Islip stands at the conflux of the River Ray and River Cherwell, which flows into the Thames at Oxford.
It is alleged that Edward the Confessor, who was to become King of England in 1042 and founder of Westminster Abbey, was born here.
Consequently the Abbey is Patron of the parish and the link is maintained.
CHURCH SERVICES (all services can be seen here)
A Memorial Service for John McNeill was held in Islip on 4 February.
John was married to Anna Eavis who sings occasionally in this benefice and in the Akeman Benefice.
He was well known as an expert guide for Martin Randall Travel and over 200 people attended.
Patronal Festival Grants 2025
Islip has been awarded a Patronal Festival Grant from Choral Evensong Trust to celebrate St Edward the Confessor on 12 October 2025 with a service at 6pm and a party afterwards.
